SERGE BLOCH X PETIT BATEAU – A CREW OF OLD SEAFARERS

SERGE BLOCH X PETIT BATEAU – A CREW OF OLD SEAFARERS

The illustrator-poet has designed a Petit Bateau capsule collection inspired by the oceans for babies, kids and grownups.

SERGE BLOCH AND PETIT BATEAU, A CHEEKY STORY

From the very beginning, the encounter between the illustrator and the knitter was full of mischief. In 2013, to celebrate the brand’s 120th birthday, Petit Bateau asked Serge Bloch to illustrate a book of… silliness. This «catalogue of (very) cheeky nonsense» set the tone for the relationship: it’s all about fun, and lots of it! Because, as Serge Bloch says, «The world is not all that funny, so we might as well add some fantasy!»

PORTRAITS OF SAILORS

When Petit Bateau decided on a collection focused on the oceans, the collaboration with Serge Bloch made perfect sense. He has already illustrated serious concepts for the brand, such as quality and safety for the skin, with the tender and light touch for which he is famous. Turning his attention to the oceans, Serge Bloch decided to play with its underwater denizens. His approach is unique: he imagines his marine animals as crusty old seafarers, tattooed with blue ink right down to the tips of their flippers. A heart, a flower, a shrimp or an ace of spades, a tender «For My Mother» or a mischievous «Daddy»… each motif tells a story with its own collection of tattoos.

THE WRITTEN WORD

Serge Bloch’s pen reveals an inspired writer as well as a fantastical illustrator; he loves stimulating the imagination with words as much as with drawings. “Babord” and “Tribord” (in English, port and starboard) are spelled out on the cuffs of the kids’ marinière, so even freshwater sailors can navigate the sea. Grinning clownfish and laughing whales, wide-eyed crabs and diving dolphins exchange private jokes in a language all their own!

SERGE BLOCH

Serge Bloch has a special place in the world of illustration in France, perhaps because he has explored far beyond its borders. With one foot in Paris and the other in New York, the native of Colmar collaborates with the most prestigious press titles on both sides of the Atlantic. But this incorrigible whiz kid is also a successful children’s author, while simultaneously creating a personal body of work exhibited in art galleries in Europe, the Americas and Asia. This may be one of his secrets: the ability to communicate with everyone with the same light touch, and never let himself be locked in a box.

Biography
